AVA Application Update

Nope, I didn’t get into the AVA exhibit. Even though I didn’t really think I would, I’m still pretty sad about it. I know the answer is to keep working all year, and apply again for 2011, but it’s tough to focus on that right now. Luckily, I have a lot of calligraphy projects coming up, and I’m working on an idea for Kickstarter.

As for painting, I’m going to keep on going with my color theory series (look for the complementary color exercises next week), and painting houses. I know that practice and repetition will help me improve.

Adding Creativity to Real Life, or When You’re Too Cheap to Buy Greeting Cards!

In the past three weeks, four babies have been born in my family! Yay!!!! But seriously, presents and cards add up quick. In the spirit of being an artist, and needing to learn my husband’s photo editing software, I decided to make some baby cards. (Yep, still no Photoshop.) Ok, maybe it was an excuse to postpone painting, but at least it involved a little creativity and saved some money so that the actual presents could be bigger. These are silly, but were fun to make!
Card Art, Kate Townley Smith

I’m pretty sure making these accomplished two important goals:

First, I need to start spending my time wisely, and if I can do two things with one action, that will go a long way towards good use of time. Sure, this took a little while, but I learned about a photo editing program, and produced cards that I would have had to go shop for.

And second, if I really want to be an artist, I should act like one! I guess my point is that whenever I can, I need to work out my creative muscles if I have any and actually create instead of consume. That way my brain spends more time in its art-mode. Hopefully. Or that’s my theory anyway.

I’m back!

Okay, I got a bit derailed last year.  I’m embarrassed that I didn’t keep this up.  So, let’s get the excuses out of the way:  My sweet kittty cat passed away on 3/13/08, and I was so so sad that I didn’t really want to do anything for a little while.   And then, I found out I was pregnant, and then we moved, and then I had a baby, and then I went back to work… basically life happened.

I’m back now, and I am drawing again.  I did a few drawings throughout the year, but now I’m going to set regular goals and work hard to get my art out there in people’s hands!
